I was born at night, but it wasn't last night

Two days.

Two days Sam and Dean had been crashing in the guest bedroom upstairs and it hadn't taken him an hour to realize there was a weird tension in the air. He wasn't sure what was going on, but he figured it was only a matter of time until it came to the surface. Stubborn idjits... every time he tried to ask about it, they'd try to brush it off like it was nothing.

Must've thought he was blind or something.

Not that he had time to be wasting on their feelings right now. There were people being picked off in a town up north from where they were and they needed to figure out what the hell was doing it. Bobby's money was on a water wraith, but you could never be too careful.

He sat at his desk, reading over a few texts he had spread out across it and only giving passing glances to where Sam sat, pouring over his own book. Dean had been sent off for a dinner and booze run... and as far as Bobby was concerned, he was taking too damn long.

"You find anything?"

Bobby looks up when he hears the footsteps and gets to his feet. "You girls finish prettying up now?"

It's light, the closest thing to a joke he can get himself to make. He doesn't even want to know what was going on up in that room, what was taking so long.

"That was my fault," he says. "Couldn't find some of my stuff." It's a completely harmless retort with nothing to be read into it, which is what he's sure Bobby needs right now.

"Where are we starting?"

[anoldgrouch]

"We got a couple hours drive ahead of us... so we do that first, then we go look at where all these people died. See what we can figure out though I already got a clue what we'll find."

[willneversayyes]

"Alright," he says, toying with the strap on his bag. "We'll follow you." No point in piling into the same car when he and Dean were going to leave after the hunt.

[anoldgrouch]

He nods. There'll be time for heart to hearts later... right now, feelings ain't going to cut it. Those need to be put on the back burner.

Dean follows Sam and Bobby out, tossing his bag in the back before getting in the driver's seat.

Part of him's just looking forward to getting this over with already, getting back on the road.

Sam throws his own bag into the trunk before sliding into the front of the car beside his brother. This is familiar. Comfortable. This he can handle.

Dean can handle this anyway. He settles in the driver seat and follows behind Bobby, focusing on the road as he cranks up the stereo. "Good to be back out, huh?"

"Yeah," he agrees. There's still the painful bite of fear sitting at the base of his spine, but he's ignoring it. Bobby is all he and Dean have. But he's hoping that since he and Dean are all Bobby have, his initial decision will hold.

Dean's worried, but for now, he's pushing it back. He quiets down for now and just drives, idly humming along with the stereo in an attempt keep himself calm.

It'll be easier on the hunt, he thinks. But for now? They had a drive ahead of them.

Sam leans his head against the window, eyes slipping closed. He should probably rest, but worry is a tight knot in his stomach. He won't be able to sleep.

"I'll wake you up when we get there." Sam probably should rest. Get some sleep in while he can since that probably wouldn't be possible when they started this job... Bobby seemed pretty gung-ho about getting right to work.

"Thanks," he murmurs. Part of him wishes he was still small enough to curl into the ball he'd used to as a child. It had always been easier to sleep like that.

"No problem, Sammy." He reached over to turn the radio down some to let Sam sleep easier and just settled in to follow Bobby. He knew where he was going and Dean was content to just go along, get this case out of the way.

He'd wake up Sam when they got to whatever roach motel they were grabbing a room at tonight.

Sam sighs softly, trying to clear his mind so he can sleep. He barely realizes it's working before he's drifting off. His body must have been more tired than he thought.

Bobby led them to some old motel and Dean parked the Impala next to his, killing the engine. Bobby called out that he'd get the rooms if they'd unload so Dean shifted a little, reaching over to give his brother a shake.

"C'mon, rise and shine, Sammy."

[willneversayyes]

Sam wakes easily under the gentle shake, sitting up in the seat with a yawn. "We're here?" he asks, rubbing at his eyes.

"Yeah, Bobby's grabbing us some rooms... help me unload all this crap so we can get to work, alright?" He smiles a little bit.

[willneversayyes]

"Yeah. Right." He gets out of the Impala, taking a second to stretch his cramped limbs before grabbing their bags.

[anoldgrouch]

Bobby's out soon, keys held loosely in his hand. "C'mon, you two. Got our rooms together to make it easier."

Two rooms because there was no damn way he was sharing a room with them tonight, if it came to that. He still needed awhile to get used to this, wrap his head around it all.

Sam nods, taking one of the sets of keys. It didn't really matter whether the room had two beds or one, so he doesn't bother asking which is which.

"Are we getting settled first or just heading out?" he asks.

[anoldgrouch]

"Settling in. We'll head out later and check out where the victims were killed." Hopefully this'd be an easy open and close case.

Both rooms had two beds -- maybe it wasn't important, but Bobby wasn't that comfortable yet getting singles for all of them. "Get settled in and washed up, we'll leave then."

[willneversayyes]

"Alright. See you in a few, Bobby." Sam heads toward the room, hoping Dean is following as he fits the key in the lock. He pushes the door open, dropping their bags just inside the door.

Dean was right behind him. He followed him into the room and tossed his stuff down on the bed closest to the door, giving a look around. "You can have the first shower, if you want."

[willneversayyes]

Sam nods, pulling a few things from his bag before disappearing into the bathroom. He closes the door, but leaves it unlocked as he starts up the shower. As far as he's concerned, his brother is always welcome to join him, even in spite of what had happened today.

He makes quick work of his clothes, groaning softly as he steps under the spray. The warm water does wonders for his tenses muscles.
