I was born at night, but it wasn't last night

Two days.

Two days Sam and Dean had been crashing in the guest bedroom upstairs and it hadn't taken him an hour to realize there was a weird tension in the air. He wasn't sure what was going on, but he figured it was only a matter of time until it came to the surface. Stubborn idjits... every time he tried to ask about it, they'd try to brush it off like it was nothing.

Must've thought he was blind or something.

Not that he had time to be wasting on their feelings right now. There were people being picked off in a town up north from where they were and they needed to figure out what the hell was doing it. Bobby's money was on a water wraith, but you could never be too careful.

He sat at his desk, reading over a few texts he had spread out across it and only giving passing glances to where Sam sat, pouring over his own book. Dean had been sent off for a dinner and booze run... and as far as Bobby was concerned, he was taking too damn long.

"You find anything?"

Sam looks a little surprised by the question. Is that the vibe they were giving off? Well, better that than sexual tension. After all, brothers fought. That was normal.

"What? No. Dean and I....we're fine." Just a little stressed out from trying so hard to lie to you. No big deal.

"You sure?" He arched a brow. "You know... I'm here."

To hear the bitching, to try and settle whatever damn problems they had now. They fought like an old married couple.

"I'm sure, Bobby. We're good," he insists, giving the man's shoulder a grateful pat. "Thanks."

He can't help but look at the clock. Dean's been gone a long time. Sam's starting to get worried about him.

"Yeah, alright..." He leaned back in his seat and rolled his shoulders, stretching cramped muscles. He checked the clock. Getting kind of late, huh...

Didn't think a food run would take this long. "Didn't know Dean was gonna have to butcher the cow for those burgers too."

"I'll call him," he says, pulling out his phone. "It's probably nothing." Dean's probably fine. But Sam isn't going to take a chance. He has to make sure his brother is alright.

He takes a couple steps away from Bobby's desk, getting more and more antsy at each ring.

He knows he's really late. He thought a little detour to clear his head, cool off would be a good idea... time just got away from him. It was tense, man, keeping things from Bobby and having to put on an act the entire time they stayed with him.

He'd just wanted to unwind a minute.

But there was his phone ringing, which meant he had been gone long enough to draw attention to himself. Damn...

"Hey, Sammy."

"We were worried," he says simply. Like he isn't breathing easier just from hearing his brother's voice. Like he wasn't terrified something had happened to him.

"When are you gonna be back? Bobby's getting crotchety without his booze."

"Dude, I'm not five. I just thought a drive around would clear my head." He does feel bad though... not like he set out to worry Sam or anything.

"I'll be back soon. You better be careful though... He'll really be crotchety if he hears you call him that, Sammy."

Sam grins, despite knowing that his brother can't see it.

"He can't hear me from here," he promises, walking into the kitchen just to be safe.

He laughs quietly at that. "So, how's it going? You getting work done?"

"We found out that it's definitely a water wraith. But not much more than that." Sam leans against the sink, eyes out the front window. "Like I said, Bobby's crotchety. He thinks we're fighting."

"What?" Dean frowned a little bit. "Why does he think we're fighting?"

"I guess he can tell we're both kinda tense," he shrugs. "I don't think we're doing a good job of being stealthy."

Which is a problem that they need to fix, or find another hunt and leave Bobby's behind for a while.

"Yeah, I guess..." He sighs and tilts his head back for a moment, trying to think. it was hard lying to Bobby about this... he knew they had to, but that didn't mean it sucked any less.

"We'll leave soon, Sammy."

"I wish we didn't have to do this," he says softly, fingers toying with the washcloth laying beside the sink. "He should know." Even as he says it he knows it's a terrible idea. Knows that they could lose the only person they have left in the world if Bobby takes it badly.

"Sam... come on, do you honestly think that's a good idea? He ain't gonna like what he hears." How could he? What they were doing wasn't normal, wasn't okay. "I don't like lying either, but I'm not interested in getting my ass kicked either."

Sam sighs softly. He knows his brother is right. Knows that telling Bobby could ruin their lives. But keeping such a heavy secret is a drain on both of them.

"You're right," he says, though it's clear he's disappointed. Not in Dean, but in their situation. "Get back soon, okay? I love you."

"I'm coming, Sammy..." He pauses. Even if he knows Sam isn't disappointed in him, it doesn't make it any easier to stomach really.

"We'll figure it out, alright?"

"Alright," he says softly. "I'll see you soon." Sam keeps the phone pressed to his ear for almost a full minute before closing it and slipping it back into his pocket. Why do their lives always have to suck? If its not running from a creature who wants to kill them, it's having to keep a secret from the only person they have left in this world.

And on that depressing note, Sam turns from the window to head back to Bobby.

"You figure out what's going on?" Bobby asked, lifting his eyes back up from the book he'd had his nose buried in. He just kind of wished he had an idea of what was going on in general, really... something was off and they were doing a damn poor job at hiding it.

"He'll be back soon," he says, dropping heavily onto the couch. "Said he just wanted to drive around and clear his head." Which he wouldn't need to do if they just told Bobby the truth. But if it was lie forever or lose him by telling the truth, Sam would choose the lie every single time. It was easier to keep the secret when they weren't staying with Bobby anyway. Soon enough they'd be on the road, and the stress would be gone.

Bobby gave a grunt at that and turned his attention away. "Gonna ask again... something going on I should know about?"

Here to listen... that was pretty much his job, wasn't it?

Sam scrubs his hands over his face, sighing quietly. "It's complicated, Bobby. But nothing Dean and I can't handle."

He promised Dean they'd keep this a secret, and Sam isn't going to break the promise. It's such a weight on his shoulders, but it's a weight he'll bear for his brother and to keep Bobby in their lives.

"Yeah, alright." Winchesters were a stubborn bunch... there wasn't any forcing them to talk unless they damn well wanted to. He let his eyes go back down to his book and read over it absently.

"Think you'll be taking off soon?"

"Probably," he admits. "Could be a Wendigo out in eastern Oregon. We'll probably head out that way in the morning."

He's relieved to have Bobby drop it. If he doesn't ask, then Sam doesn't have to lie. It's so much easier that way.
